Vienna or Copenhagen?

My partner and I are trying to decide on which to do for a long holiday weekend at the end of May. We both have been through Innsburck on a ski trip but only there for a few hours before flying home. Neither of us have been to Copenhagen. I've heard Denmark can be expensive. Also, we enjoy staying in B&B's or small boutique hotels. Suggestions?

In my opinion, Vienna - hands down, no comparison.

I stayed at Hotel Lindner am Belvedere in Vienna, and I really liked it. The breakfast was great, with an amazing selection of teas.

What are your interests? Outdoors, shopping, museums, arts, food?

As to expense, Copenhagen is as expensive as you have heard, but Vienna isn't exactly a bargain, either.

Thanks WillTravel, I've thought it may be better to go to Vienna myself as it would be warmer than Copenhagen.

Travelgourmet I'm thinking D.) All of the above. But mostly just want to get out of London for a bit and take advantage of the quick hop over to the mainland.

It is true the prices in both cities are high. But a trip to tivoli gardens is well worth it. One of the highlights of a recent trip.

I am not too crazy of Vienna as a city, - purely personal opinion, a crowd of people will disagree, - but I think Ring alone has enough to keep one occupied over a week-end. Of course you didn't specify what are your interests, - Innsbruck obviously is not compatible, - so if you are not interested in museums, go to Denmark.

Having said that, Copenhagen and its surroundings do have some great museums too. The Jewish Museum, the Resistance Museum, some art museums, Glyptotek, and probably some others that don't spring to mind.

Hey Ret,

Tough choice, but I would go with Copenhagen.

Great town, great food, great people. Tivoli Gardens.

My vote would be for Vienna. Copenhagen is very expensive but that is not the reason I vote for Vienna. There is more to see and do there.

I vote for Copenhagen. The maritime feel at Nyhavn is great, the food is outstanding (Noma was just picked the world's best restaurant by San Pellegrino yesterday!), the Louisiana Museum up the coast is wonderful as is the National Art Museum in town, there are some wonderful walking neighborhoods, Rosenborg Castle is a must see, and the castle and grounds (Fredricksborg) at Hillerød (about 30 km out of town, easy bus or train ride) are also stunning. There are some small boutique hotels in Copenhagen that are not too pricey, but I would have to say that it's a more expensive city than Vienna, primarily because of the cost of food. Other costs are more comparable, but even simple dining (unless you exist on the polser (hot dogs) from the street vendors (which are quite good)) gets expensive fast in Copenhagen. However, since the simple stuff is so expensive, the differential between mundane and fine dining costs shrinks (better value it seems at the expensive end).

You could go to Copenhagen to eat at the worlds best restaurant Noma. Just elected yesterday http://www.noma.dk/main.php?lang=en But it is a "bit" pricey, and table would probably not be available before in about 4 months time.

Noma is truly special, but you should plan your trip around your reservation, not your reservation around your trip. Currently, they are fully booked through the end of their reservation calendar. New tables open up each night at midnight CET.

If you can't get into Noma, I suggest Formel B.
