Vienna Airport Hotel
For an early morning departure, I am seeking information on a hotel near the Vienna Airport. The airport web site shows a conference-type hotel which is more expensive than I care to pay. Does anyone know of a hotel? Or is the airport close enough to the city that I could plan to stay in town? Thanks for your help.
Hi,

The Vienna airport is around 20 minutes away from the city by rail with bus services also available. The first brail service to the airport is around 4:30 am with services every 30mins so it probably is possible to stay in the city.

I do not know of any hotels in the immediate area of the airport.

I've overnighted in Vienna twice this year. My flights were not early morning, however, why stay at the airport when there is so much to see and do in the city? It's not hard to take either a train into Vienna then the subway (U BAHN) or trams to hotels. I stayed at the Wandl (2 blocks from St. Stephens in the old city for about $80 incldg breakfast, and the Austria (also similar price and in the old city). Look in Frommer's or Fodor's on line. Their recommendations for hotels are pretty good.

Be aware that the main train station is under redevelopment, so trains from the airport may not stop there, as was the case when I was there last November. But there is an express bus from that location.

I would not stay near the airport. Stay near the Air Terminal (where the buses go to/from airport near the First Ring). I stayed at Hotelpension Arenberg (about a 3-5 minute walk to Air Terminal. It is a 4-star, Best Western (but with posh Vienna feel in nice area), and short walk to U-Bahn or Stephenplatz. The buses started running around 5:30 a.m. in December 2000.

My wife and I stayed at the Airport Hotel on Marco Polo Strasse, about 5 minutes from the airport. It doesn't look any better than a Motel 6 but we were very content there. The breakfast was wonderful, exactly what my wife needed the next morning. She is always exhausted after a long flight and insists on a night's rest at a nearby hotel on arrival.
The Airport Hotel has complimentary shuttle service, but you have to go to the green counter at the airport and show them your hotel confirmation. They will direct you to the free shuttle service. Otherwise, the driver will charge you 12 or 13 Euro.
The next day we requested the shuttle return us to the airport where we caught the bus for 5 or 6 Euro (can buy on the bus) to downtown City Terminal right next to the Hilton where we stayed for a couple of nights. (Internet access using hotel room phone connection is reasonable.)
We spent the next 2 nights at the Imperial Hotel, Sheraton/Starwood Luxury Collection hotel, using American Advantage 1/2 off hotel coupon for Sheraton, where Internet access is free in the business center next to the front desk.
The Astra Airport Hotel was formerly Novotel, and yes, it's very expensive.
Both the Hilton and the Imperial are close to concert halls, if that's a concern. Dining after a concert at the Imperial's Cafe is reasonable.
