I see you are going in May - a nice month in the Bernina Area and in warm weather the local regional trains off seats in topless cars - basically seats just on a platform and after riding these I can say that experience if awesome - much better than any domed observation car as there is no roof and no windows - just a flat car to move thru the scintillating scenery on. Not all trains have these cars but many IME do - they are regular 2nd class cars as regular prices.

You can also take the Bernina Express bus from Lugano to Tirano, Italy if you want to overnight in Lugano rather than Tirano - a nice bus ride when it leaves Lugano and skirts Lake Como, I believe. If you had a Eurailpass it would be valid on the Bernina Express bus ride as well with some kind of minor supplement.
