This summer, I will be spending twelve days in Italy with my husband; 5 days in Rome, 4 days in Florence, and 3 days in Venice. There will be some day trips here and there while in Rome and Florence as well. It’s our first trip to Italy. My question comes in regards to a two night stay in Paris on the way back. We booked Icelandair tickets that will take us from the states to Paris and back. We then planned on taking a short flight to Rome from Paris when arriving, then from Venice to Paris coming back. We have two nights scheduled in Paris on the return. I did this because we went to Paris a couple of years ago, and there were some things I still wanted to see, mainly Montmartre and the Sacre Coeur. My original plan was to take the short flight from Venice to Paris, but I’ve been considering taking a train than would take us through Switzerland. We love seeing the countryside, and it would be worth it to us if we could see some beautiful scenery. We still would have time the next day to see the sights I wanted, but I wanted to ask if anyone has taken the train from Venice to Paris and knowing that there would be more than one train most likely, did they find it worth it?

I took the train from Venice to Paris last year. I took it not through Switzerland but through France (hadn't been south of Paris before). I love train travel and find it relaxing and fun. But, I took over a week to do it with stops in between. With such a short time in Paris at the end, I'd surely fly and use the extra time in Paris. Plan a future trip where you can stop in Switzerland here and there off the train, not just see it from the train window.

I did it but by night train. Venice to Milan in the afternoon. Then a private sleeper cabin Milan to Paris. It worked well but no scenery involved : )

The only train solutions which would make (some) sense in such a short time would be:

overnight train Venice dp 19.20 - Paris ar 9.37. You would see nothing of Switzerland, however, as you would sleep in your sleeping car bed when crossing this country between 1am and 4am;

Late afternoon train Venice dp 16.20 - Brig ar 21.16. Sleep in a hotel in the pedestrian zone of the medieval city center of Brig (a few steps from the railway station. Morning trip to Riederalp - Alesch Glacier (1-2 hrs OW, according to the peak you choose). Brig dp by train 16.26 via Lake Geneva to Paris ar 22.03

Overnight trains are neat if you can sleep on them - I've taken zillions and rarely had any trouble but there always is a modicum of noise coming from inside and outside the train. but going Venice to Paris direct at night saves time even over flying for lots on overnight trains check www.rickstves.com; BETS-European Rail Experts and www.seat61.com - the latter especially good on booking discounted fares if available for your style of sleeping accommodation.
