Yes, I'm back. I just posted my reviews about 15 minutes ago in a brand new thread. I was really pleased with my choices.

While I find it fun researching restaurants as with anything else holiday-related, in my 6 trips (8 weeks) to Venice so far I've never booked ahead. There are a few places we like where we know we'll be able just to turn up (sometimes waiting but no more than 10 mins) : otherwise we usually just stop by a place we know to be good or where we like the look of the menu, at lunchtime/teatime on the day or day before (if our route that day takes us nearby) and book then. Admittedly we don't eat at Michelin-starred restaurants which would presumablly book up further in advance, but we have never failed to get a table anywhere we've wanted to go doing it this way.

The one time we tried to book ahead, for my birthday this year, we never managed to get through by phone either from home or once in Venice (and they didn't take online/email reservations). So there too we stopped by at lunchtime the day before and no problem. This incidentally was at La Zucca which I'd got the impression was popular and needed booking at least a week or two ahead, hence the attempt. I'd also seen TA reviews where people had managed to book further ahead and had specified an outside table, but still either had to wait and/or didn't get an outside table. Our outside table was ready and waiting for us - in fact we had a choice of two. Btw it was very good and I'd go back.

Incidentally, re "it seems Venice is particularly expensive!)" - we had thought it was about the most expensive place in Italy, but just having been to Florence for the first time in 19 years, eating out there is *much* more expensive ! At least by 50% I'd say, and we didn't eat all that well there either.
