I'm a theatre person, not an opera buff but I do enjoy it.
One year we were too early for the opera in Vernona. Another year four of us were going and we bought our tickets and booked our hotel nearly a year in advance. The opera was Aida. As luck would have it, we spent the evening in and out of the rain as they kept delaying the start. Finally at about 11 they cancelled the performance without ever starting it. So I still haven't seen one there.
The Arena is huge. You can buy tickets on line. I'm not sure if they sell out or if you can usually get tickets at the last minute.
