We will also be there on a Sunday, and it will be my son's birthday. He is only turning 9 so we don't need anything fancy, but are pizza/pasta places open for dinner? What about pastry shops during the day? He wanted to pick out a special birthday dessert.

The best pastry shop in Venice (no irony, this time) is Maria Boscolo, open on Sundays - see http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34791666

amamax, there are lots of pizza places open on Sundays. A few of my favorites:
Casa Mia, Calle Oca in Cannaregio (just off Campo SS Apostoli
Alla Strega, on the Barbaria de Tole in Cannaregio close to SS Giovanni & Paolo
(this one is really fun for kids)
Pizzeria Accademia at the foot of the Accademia bridge on the Dorsoduro side, good pizza, but incredible view
Pizzeria ae Oche, on Calle delle Tintor in Santa Croce (there are two streets with the same name, so be careful)
All of these are good for kids and I think he would enjoy a birthday at any of them.

Thank you, thank you so much!! I have been really worried reading that restaurants are not open on Sundays (not just on this site), so love the specific suggestions. His one wish for this trip was that we be in Venice for his birthday...he's never even been there and it calls to his soul, lol.
Thank you again!!!

Oops! Alla Strega is in Castello not Cannaregio! What WAS I thinking?
You sound like you have a really cool 9 year old. If he is that sophisticated, take him for birthday pizza at Il Refolo - it's a bit pricier but has a wonderful canalside setting.
It's on the other side of the church at Campo San Giacomo dell Orio in Santa Croce. They are only open in the warm months, however (not sure when you are going...)
