What if anything is open in Venice on Sunday's? I will be arriving Saturday morning from Brussels around 10am from the airport and need to plan..I leave on tuesday morning for Paris.

Sorry, but your question is hard to understand. What do you mean? Sights, restaurants, shops?

Yes, Venice is open on Sundays.


I found that the tourist sights (Doges palace, St. Mark, etc), seemingly every restaurant, shops in the central tourist zone, and some small neighborhood markets were open.

Closed were many craft shops, many neighborhood stores (bakeries, wine shops, etc), local businesses, and large chain food markets.

J62, you haven't been in Venice proper, have you? Just in the tourist ghetto around Piazza S. Marco, I suppose... It's near to impossible to find a decent (as opposed to tourist rip-off) restaurant open on a Sunday; in fact, only one and a half are open: Vini da Gigio regularly, and Capitan Uncino when they feel like...

...two and a half, sorry: Al Bacco stays open, too.

Thanks for the correction franco. I guess my recent experience in both Dorsodoro and Castello areas was in error then, or a dream.

There are plenty of good restaurants open on Sundays, Franco! Antico Dolo, Al Paradiso, Poste Vecie, Riviera, just to name a few...

Ok, but the Riviera aside, these ARE tourist places. I agree that the Antico Dolo is surprisingly good for such a place, but the percentage of local guests is not at all overwhelming there, right? In fact, I didn't mean to be that serious, but nonetheless, I should have put it less ironically and more precisely: it's indeed one of the most notorious touristic problems in Venice that so very few (of course not just two and a half, I had hoped the irony was obvious) good restaurants are open on Sundays. I remember chatting once with a receptionist at the Gritti (the best luxury hotel of Venice) - two things made him despair: guests having to eat after a late arrival, and guests looking for a meal on Sundays.

There's a big difference between a restaurant with tourists and "tourist rip-off!" I didn't get the irony, sorry... but if there were no good restaurants open in Venice on Sunday, I would have starved a great many Sundays.

Skydog, if there is something in particular you are looking for in a specific area (pizza, wine bars, what have you) let us know.

One of our favorites in Venice is open on Sundays, Anice Stellato. Lucky for us, it's far enough in the Cannaregio that I think not many tourists are willing to walk that far.

Church services are always a good option for Sunday....

Lexma, you've reminded me... close to Anice Stellato is the Fondamenta Misercordia, and there are a BUNCH of restaurants there, almost all of them open on Sunday. It's a happening spot, for Sunday lunch!

Check the Rialto Market area for a flea market. There was one there on a Sunday in March, '06.

A lot of small churches were closed, but we had a great lunch on the Fondamenta Misericordia, as mentioned above by rialtogirl. I will try to find the name of the restaurant. It was a little on the formal side in decor, with handsome waiters, and the food was great.

skydog, thanks for asking this question...we are in much the same "boat" (pun intended)...I know this is almost blasphemy, but we will arrive on Sunday morning and only be there 24 hrs. (I know, I know, but 24 hours is better than none at all, we thought--just to get a "taste" of it. I was wondering just this same exact question with respect to the restaurants.

Anice Stellato is open for dinner, and would be a great choice. It focuses on fresh seafood, and offers reasonably creative cuisine. Fodor's mentions it, as does Sandra Gustafson's Cheap Eats in Italy. More importantly, it's noted by Gambero Rosso.

It's located at Fondamenta della Sensa, 3272. It's close to the "cross-street" calle di capitello. I would guess it's about 10 minutes from your hotel.

Lexma90, thanks so much for the information. We are traveling with friends and the man is a bit finicky--doesn't eat any shellfish, wants his meat wellllll done gt...and is most definately NOT a foodie!! It could be a

Lovesroses, I don't think I would go to Anice Stellato with someone who doesn't eat fish. The menu is fish-based there for sure.

Vini da Gigio would be a good choice, as it is close to your hotel and has lots of other options besides fish. Make sure to reserve though!

It's not that he won't eat fish, he just won't eat shellfish. I googled Vino di Gigio's and the article I read, by a restaurant reviewer, said it was closed on Sundays...have they changed their policy and are now open on Sundays? Thanks for the info....

If he will eat fish, he will find something to eat at Anice Stellato!

Vini da Gigio is absolutely open on Sundays. You can even book online (but make sure to bring a confirmation receipt.)
