Venice in November??

Considering a 4 day trip to Venice with husband and 14 year old son in late November. Is this a good time to go? Any recommendations on what to see and where to stay that time of year would be appreciated. Just arrived in Vienna for a year and will be planning trips around school vacations and long weekends.

You may encounter "acqua alta" (flooding, generally restricted to a few areas in Venice; many hotels can provide boots, and wooden walkways are put up by the city).

Otherwise, the things to see are no different in November than they are in any other month. Since Piazza San Marco always gets flooded if there is acqua alta, you might want to consider a hotel that is not in the sestiere of San Marco but perhaps in Dorsoduro.

Hello Vienna, I have been in Venice in May when the the tide was up and there was rain and the Piazza San Marco had the acqua alta.

A lot of my Italian friends that live in the region of Veneto actually wait until after the middle of October to go to Venice so that the large amount of tourist are not there.

The only thing I would comment on is if you are flying you may find that the fog could delay your flight. But if that is not a problem for you time wise I sure would go to Venice in November.

Hi
as you know, most places north of the equator, in winter, have more frequent drizzle and cooler temps than, say, in Sept or May. If this is an opportunity to go, then go by all means. Days may be shorter, but crowds will be less.

I have a long file on Venice; if you'd like to see it, email me at

Thanks for the info. This will be our first time in Italy so we weren't sure what to expect. Definitely won't let water and short days stand in our way. Saw Iceland in relative darkness in November and still managed to have a fantastic time!

Elaine, I will be in touch to get more info. Thanks!
