Venice in May- how many days? Tentative itinerary

We like art, music, architecture, and history. We spent a week in Venice, and it was not enough, so we'll have to go back.
If your interests are along these lines, I suggest you get an apartment in Venice and spend your whole vacation there, and on the nearby islands.
