Verona or extra day in Venice?

Our 2 1/2 trip to Italy begins with 3 days in Bellagio at the Hotel Florence. Then, we have a possible night in Verona (mid week, no opera, alas) and then two nights in Venice at the Accademia, then off to Florence and Tuscany.

Would we be better off just day tripping in Verona and adding an extra night in Venice? Or would the extra time in Verona be worthwhile?

Thanks for your advice, Fodorites!

We were in Verona 5 years ago, and would go back in a heart beat. It has a great pedestrian area, amphitheater and delicious food and ambiance. We visited Verona as a one night stopover on the way to Venice, and as much as we loved it, we did not need more than a day to take in this wonderful city. Once you are in Venice, I doubt you will want to leave to visit Verona.

Definitely go to Verona. It's beautiful. As lbrown said, the amphitheatre is amazing (I was at the Opera festival there a few years ago and saw an incredible production of Aida). There is a gorgeous square in the centre of town, lovely shops and, of course, the famous balcony! The main advantage of staying there for a night is that, unlike Venice, there are far less tourists. There are a lot of daytrippers, but the evenings are very pleasant without the hoardes.

Verona is a nice city and I wouldn't mind going back, but 2 nights in Venice are not sufficient. Verona is nice, but no nicer than many other Italian cities. Venice is a unique world treasure.

I agree with Rufus. If I only had three days, I would do all three in Venice. If I had more time (as I plan on my next trip), I would fit in Verona, as well.

Our last trip to Venice was four days and we still didn't get to see everything we wanted to.
