Venice in 24 hours or less?

There are hotels in residential neighborhoods in historic Venice as well.
It always seemed to me that staying in Mestre on a trip "to" Venice is like staying in Newark on a trip "to" Manhattan. You can get cheaper accomodations there, but...well, you're in Newark.
By the way, here's a couple of New Jersey jokes.
1. Do you know why New Yorkers are so depressed?
The light at the end of the tunnel is New Jersey.
2. Did you here about the tornados that hit Newark, New Jersey?
They caused $500,000,000 in improvements.
