Venice - Hotel Continental

We will be in Venice in September and are being quartered in the Hotel Continental by our tour company (GCT).

I can't find it on any web site. Where is it and any comments about it.

Thanks O

We have been to Venice in the past so have a sort of an idea where things are.

We stayed at the Continental in 1996. It's near Santa Lucia train station. Not the best location in Venice, but it has advantages.

It is right on the Grand Canal, so try to get a canal view room. It is near (within a couple of minutes) both a bridge across the Grand Canal and a major vaporetto stop (for the train station). Our room was not huge, but large enough to move around in freely without stumbling over suitcases, and the bathroom was good. Hotel staff were pleasant and helpful--though it was 7 years ago now, so things might have changed.

They had a pleasant enough outdoor dining area, though we like to try different places to eat wherever we go, so we only had 2 meals there.

All-in-all, it worked out fine.

A lot of tour companies put their customers in Mestre hotels, so the Continental is in a gem of a location by comparison.

Check Yahoo.com. and tripadvisor.com for some comments from previous guests. But there isn't a hotel website. Information on other sites says the hotel is located in Canareggio district. Pictures of the hotel look nice.

The above link will show you Hotel Continental. I just stayed there 2 weeks ago. It has its plus & minuses. First, it is on the island of Venice, which is very good. It is an old building, if I remember well, 300 years old or so, therefore, it doesn't have all of the modern details you might expect from some other hotels. I mention that because some of people in our tour (Insight Tours) were not happy with the plumbing which wasn't the best, but personally, I think it wasn't all that bad, it was worth being right in Venice as opposed to being on the mainland.

They are doing some renovation, don't be put off by the lobby, which is scheduled for some updating. The rooms seem to be okay sizes. I was traveling with a friend and our room had 2 single beds, it was a perfectly decent size room, unfortunately we didn't have a view, but we weren't in our room for much more than showering and sleeping, so it was okay. Our beds were comfortable, but some of the couples who were there and had a double bed said that the bed sunk in the middle, they joked that they felt they slept in a gondola.

Would I recommend it? Sure, why not. Since you're going with a tour, you don't really have a choice, but at the same time, you probably won't be there for more than 2 nights, so the interesting shower, it seemed as if someone flushed a toilet in a room nearby, you got a little bit more hot water , won't be that big of a thing.

My advice is don't worry, the hotel is just fine, and most of all, you'll be in Venice, enjoy it, it's a MAGICAL place.

Have fun,

Lynn
