eddie - we stayed at Kette last Feb for 1st week of carnivale and hated it. Had a dreary room which looked like it used to be a passage nothing like the pictures on the net. Breakfast was a bun fight having to wait for a table and then trying to get someone to serve us was a joke. Coffee was lukewarm and took days before we could get them to give us a hot pot. It has good reviews so guess it was because of carnivale.

I discovered this gem - and totally loved my stay.

Steps away from a quiet wonderful piazza, and 2 mins from accademia bridge and vaporetto stop.

http://www.locandaartdeco.com/

Eddie-
We stayed in Hotel Ateneo (I think it was October 1999). The location is good, well off the tourist tracks, but comfortable walking distance to San Marco and Rialto areas. We had a hard time finding it the first time. Our room was small but quite nice, as was the bathroom. There is no elevator. The breakfast was fine, and I think we did not hear anyone else there speaking English. We can't remember what we paid, but we both recall thinking it was somewhat expensive for the overall quality.
Byrd
