Venice help!

Hey guys

We are in Siena now and headed for Venice. It is HOT. We have reservations for a nice hotel on a canal. My question is this.... Should we consider either only day triping to Venice or going to the lido or a local island? Please suggest. Ive been told by locals that it will be unpleasant due to the smell from the very hot weather. We can easily change our plans at this point. Kindly suggest ASAP.

Thank you!!

ps. Ive not studied the local islands. Thus if we should go there, please tell me which and why. Thank you ever so much. I promise a full report when home in July.

Venice is a must-see - so different with a myriad of canals and bridges, no vehicles and lots of history. I've been there 3 times and have never noticed the canals smelling, but have never been there in mid-summer either. I would still go, and stay IN Venice, not on an island or the Lido. Not sure where you mean by another island - Murano and Burano are nice but not the sort of place people normally stay, it's more of a day trip.

Venice is not any smellier than anywhere else. There is an ocean scent but that's a good thing. Where garbage is being collected in any city will have an odor, but walk a block away and it will be gone. I can't believe the number of people who would consider not going to Venice because it might be smelly. And it isn't any hotter than anywhere else, in fact its cooler than the mainland. And even if it were hot and smelly it would still be a wonderful worthwhile place.

Venice is one of the worst daytrip destinations in Europe. The way the city is laid out in relationship to the major sights that daytrippers want to see almost ensures a less than pleasant experience.

I found enjoyment in Venice after the daytrippers had left. For me, there was a night and day difference walking around before 4 p.m., when the daytrippers left on their boats, and before. To not experience the city when the overwhelming crowds have left, is to short change your visit.

To be able to sit in the Piazza San Marco with a cocktail listening to the competiting bands, is one of the more enjoyable things in Venice.

Venice is NOT TO BE MISSED--- It is terrific...and soooooooooooo romantic!!
The smells are NOT bad at all....we even did a Gondola ride at nite--
As another poster said, sit at the San Marco Plaza at nite and have a drink and listen to the bands- it is INCREDIBLE!! I used to write my daily travel diary while sitting at those tables listening to the wonderful Italian music.....

Venice is a plae like NO OTHER!! The streets are all winding, it is easy to get lost but FUN to find your way around.

DO NOT miss the PEGGY GUGGENHEIM Home opened as a MUSEUM....she lived among all this wonderful MODERN art...it is an incredible site!

Have dinner overlooking the canal at nite and try the pasta with squid ink ( it just dyes the pasta black, but the taste is GREAT!

DO NOT DAY TRIP TO VENICE-- to me, 3 days is not enough to explore this city.

I LOVE VENICE!!!!

I've been to Venice twice, both times in August. Was very hot but never "smelly". Staying *IN* Venice is the only way to go (IMO). Sit in the shade on a bench somewhere! Enjoy, you lucky person you!!
