Venice...Carlton Grand Canal, Splendid Suisse, Locando Sturion?
We are headed to Venice...we'll be there Sept. 12-15. Last minute, I know! We've found availability at these hotels. Any input on recent stays there? Trip Advisor reports seem to be all over the map from wonderful to terrible. I'm confused! What we want is a place on the Grand Canal with view. Thanks.

I don't have a great sense of direction and I don't have my map handy, but I don't see the Splendid Suisse being on the Grand Canal. Its front entrance faces a small canal (good litte restaurant, Sempione, is on the other side of the canal) and you are quite close to San Marco Piazza and the view out to the lagoon. Do the upper floors have views of the GC?
I do think it's a great location, view aside.

It's typical, on the lower end actually, for full service larger hotels.
Venice has many fine, smaller hotels, some with or without elevators, some with or without a/c, that are well under $200 per night, for a double.
And for tighter budgets, there are plenty of decent places under $150 but these are lower on charm and are unlikely to have views.

Good evening, blueky9ny
The CARLTON GRAND CANAL is located on the Grand Canal with the front rooms facing the Canal and the SL Venice RR
Station.
The SPLENDID SUISSE is located on a calle with a little canal alongside about half way between the Pza S. Marco and the Rialto Bridge.\
The LOCANDO STURION is located close to
the MARCONI in San Polo and faces the
Grand Canal.. Did stay at the Carlton
when it was remodeled and renamed
the Carlson Excutive, but that was 300 years ago. Richard of LaGrange Park, Il.

My husband and I stayed at the Splendid Suisse a few years ago, and it was terrible! Not cheap, either! We had a nice view onto the small canal, the location was good, but the room smelled terrible (especially the bathroom) and it was totally without charm.
I have read some recent reviews that they are updating the hotel, so there is probably some construction noise as well.
I am sure you can do better for that price range.

WE STAYED AT THE LOCANDA STURION. FOR US THE LOCATION WAS GREAT! ON THE GRAND CANAL, NEAR RIALTO BRIDGE AND CENTRALLY LOCATED! YOU WILL CLIMB A FLIGHT OF STAIRS AND MAYBE WITH NO HELP WITH YOUR LUGGAGE, BUT IF YOU CAN GET PAST THAT, THE HOTEL IS CLEAN AND AUTHENTIC!! WE WERE THERE 5 YRS AGO, PAID ABOUT 185.00 A NIGHT.FOR US, ST MARKS SQUARE IS WAY TO TOURISTY, HERE THERE'S A GOOD MIX OF TOURIST AND LOCALS! GOOD LUCK

Just got back today! We stayed at Palazzo Sant'Angelo - it was wonderful! I got a rate of $325 Euros on hotels.com! A few great things to note - It is right on the Grand Canal and about a 15 second walk from the Sant Angelo water stop! Very important since you will be lugging luggage! It talk all of 10 minutes to walk to Accademia Bridge, Rialto Bridge and about at 12-15 minute walk to San Marco! LOVED the location and don't forget the importance of having a lift (elevator) to transport you and your luggage! Many of the hotels in Venice do not have this and I saw many poor souls trapsing their luggage over the bridges to get to their hotels located in the interior! I can't imagine then having to lug it upstairs! Also to note - the hotel.com price was for the run of the house - this was the lowest rate as you get what is available! I was happy to see that we were given a beautiful room with a sitting area and a large bathroom! It has a great bar and a decent breakfast! Don't take the hotel desk guys recommendations however on restaurants or a murano tour - he clearly is being incentivised and we got ripped at the restaurant we went to!
