Venice airport transportation
I have spent hours scouring the boards without success. Such a simple question ! Can I get public transport into Venice from Marco Polo after midnight (we arrive at 11:00 pm.)
Or: Is there a hotel nearby the airport with shuttle service? We will only be one night in Venice. Will return at the end of our trip for a few days. From what I can see on line there is no hotel actually AT the airport ??!!
Thanks

Just back from Venice myself.
You can reach Venice by the Alilaguna boat. It costs 10 Euros. According to their web site www.alilaguna.it there is a boat that leaves Marco Polo Airport at 10 mins past midnight. It will take just over an hour to reach St Mark's Sq.
The alternative is to take the bus to Piazzale Roma and then take a Vaporetto. However, I am not sure on the timings. Check out www.actv.it.
I don't believe there is a hotel at the airport. However, it is worth making the effort to go into Venice. An alternative for 1 night might be a hotel in Mestre.
I am sure the Venice Tourist office could help you further +39 041 541 5887.

I'm confused. I understood that water taxis wait at the airport, much like regular taxis wait at other major airports, around the clock. Is this correct, or are they only there certain hours, or is it always necessary to have the hotel arrange it in advance? I will be arriving at 7 p.m. on a Sunday evening.

There usually are water taxis waiting at the water dock, you shouldn't have any problems finding one at 7PM. It might be better anyway to call the taxi company at this number to reserve one: +39-041-5222303 , and tell them when your flight arrives, so you have a water taxi waiting for you. Or check out their website: http://www.motoscafivenezia.it/english/english.htm
It is expensive but it is the quickest way into the city. If you take the Alilaguna public boat at 12:10AM you'll be in the city by 1:30AM...
I think this is the best thing to do if you are staying the night to see Venice.
However if you just need to spend the night close to Marco Polo, there is a hotel very close to the airport, with a free shuttle service, the Fly Hotel: http://www.flyhotelvenice.com/index.htm
