We stayed last Sept07 at Locanda San Barnaba for 170E double or twin (160E in cash). Very nice hotel, breakfast patio, bar, salon room, about 50 meters from Ca'Rezzonico vaporetto stop (Line 1 only). This is the Dorsoduro area. Our room was the 'pink' twins with the draped chairs and wood beams.

Check out Hotel Abadessa
http://www.abadessa.com/en/index.htm
It's pretty amazing. We stayed there last August for about 200 Euro and would return tomorrow if we could. A gorgeous garden for a very sumptuous breakfast or complementary aperitivo in the evening. Comfortable, quiet, elegant room with a bigger than usual bathroom. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel sits on one of the side canals if you want a water taxi to take you directly to it. And it's about a block and half to the Grande Canal at the Ca D'Oro stop. Once you get the lay of the land you'll be surprised how central the location is. And if you don't mind walking a little bit to the north you can take the Alilaguna line directly to or from the airport.

We stayed at the Westin Europa which is right on the canal.
I didn't want to stay in the typical "americanized hotel" but we had teenagers with us. They loved the hotel. The breakfast buffet is served in the restaurant overlooking the canal.
It is a short walk to St.Marks square.
I would highly recommend this hotel.
They also have a private water taxi from the train station to the hotel if you wish.

USD250 = € 158
Westin Europa is 5 *. Probably out of question even in low seasons.
Liassidi4* would also be hard. As somebody above wrote, it's important to know when you are going. The rates can change a lot depending on it.

We stayed at B & B Sandra http://www.bbalessandra.com/ when we visited Venice a few years ago. Depending upon your needs, this place and their location was perfect. We had the upper room with the rooftop terrace. A very clean place, wonderful hosts and yummy breakfasts. We found her neighborhood easy to navigate and transportation to everything within walking distance. Have a great time in Venice. What a great city! Shirley
