We've stayed at the Hotel American in Dorosoduro twice. The rooms are small but well appointed and some have small balconies with a lovely view of Rio San Vio. The bathrooms were modern with all amenities. We love the area, residential but a short walk to the Accademia vaporetto stop. You should be able to get a canal view room in your price range. There are several posts on fodors rants and raves. www.hotelamerican.com

We stayed at La Calcina and if you put the name in the search box, you will find a lot of info on this hotel. Our corner canal view room was 182 euros in July (breakfast included). We passed by the Hotel American and it looked cute, too.

On a canal near the Bridge of Sighs. Some rooms have views of it. Gets good reviews here and on trip advisor, but some rooms are small. Ask about square meters, anything under 20 is very small, and between 20-25 is small but a bit more liveable.

Very charming, good size rooms. On a little canal. Some rooms have canal view, but not as wide open view as the Colombina would be.

May be a bit above your price range, but take a look. Fully renovated in Spring 2004.
It's right on the Grand Canal and just a few minutes walk to San Marco, and quite near to Harry's Bar.

3 Star B&B. which gets an amazing amount of compliments on trip advisor. Not sure they have canal views, check the website. I have not stayed here but would like to try it some time.
