We have the opportunity to stay in Milan for 1 and venice for 3, or should we do Milan for 2 and Venice for 2

Well you don't give us much info on likes, interests etc. Most people here think Milan can be missed altogether. Milan has great food & shopping. Venice is like no place else in the world. In general, opt for more Venice.

I agree with the earlier posts. I would skip Milan and spend all 4 nights in Venice. There is no place like it in the world and you won't regret the choice.

More in Venice, less in Milan, though Milan does get a bad rap.

I'd say 3 days for Venice. I have visited once and didn't have time to enjoy the city enough. Haven't visited Milan yet but not too many people seem to like it as much as Venice.

Hi

My wife and I went to Milan and Venice in June last year and we had a good time. I think we stayed 3 days in Milan and 4 days in Venice. In Milan you can check out the Duomo, Last supper, Scala amongst other things. I have posted a trip report with lots of pictures on my personal homepage www.gardkarlsen.com Maybe you can find some useful information there. Have a great trip

Regards
