Dear Brahmama, I did not see your post of 2-16-05 to me. I am so sorry. I truly hope you were not thinking I was ignoring you.

Sometimes threads get "lowered" because of so many other threads and consequently they seem to get lost.

Now, since it has been over a week, have you come up with any thoughts about where you want to spend your "extra" week in Italy? It is rather late on a Thursday night, and I just read your post, so I do not have any clever ideas but thought first of all I would write to you and bring this thread up to the top of the threads. And then tomorrow hopefully I will see your reply.

And I am going to start a new thread for Grinisa, thanks to her telling me about the book "The Women Of Molise".

I will look forward to hearing from you Brahmama. And again my apologies I did not see your post to me. Take care.

Dear LoveItalyl,
I had not found your answer, it had scrolled down so far. But I clicked on my name and there you were! Thank you for asking about our trip in October.
I do have it still about the same except for the last week.
1 week in Proceno/tip top of Lazio
4 days in Venafro/Molise
But now we are thinking of winding up our trip in Puglia.
We have a contact with a Masseria where we would like to stay for 3 or 4 nights - and then over to the coast. We would like to stay at Poglinano for two nights and then find a place from which we can take the train into Lecce - etc. Maybe even over to Matera. Are you familiar with Puglia? Do you have any suggestions as to where to stay? Remember we are budget travelers, so that is always a concern.
I think that your thread for Grinsia is a good idea. I am reading "War in Val D'Orcia" right now (Iris Origo) to have some history of the area around Proceno, but I haven't found anything to read for Molise. Do you know of anything? Maybe I should get a copy of the "Women of Molise" for a hostess gift for our lady in venafro!
When do you go to Italy again? I think that I read somewhere that you were going either in May or June?

Hi Carol/Brahmama, good to see your post. I have been thinking of you.

First of all "The Women of Molise" is fantastic. Not a travelbook as we would normally think of. All black and white photos - of the women basically of Cantalupo in 1950. I think that this book would make an excellent hostess present. And it is not big and heavy which makes it easy to pack.

BTW, I ordered it through Amazon, it was sent through BookBrothers.net who are in Philadephia. The cost of the book was $2.10 and with shipping the total cost including shipping (UPS) was only somewhere around $6.00, can you believe that? I am going to order two more, one for me and one for my daughter as she was in Cantalupo in 1978 with us and so would like one too.

Carol, I am sorry to say that I have not visited the towns you want to go to
but I think that it would be a wonderful trip. On the Adriatic coast I have not been further south then Bari (which I loved). We drove to Bari from Naples.

Oh that reminds me, I don't know of any books that take place in Molise but there is a book you might find interesting.

It was written by an Italian (cannot remember his name) and has been translated into several languages. A movie came out last year also under the same title. It is on DVD. The name of the book and the movie is "I'm Not Scared".

This is not a "chick story" by any means but I could not put it down.

It takes place in southern Italy in 1978. Quite interesting to me as then is when we drove from Naples to Bari.
Our ho-hum movie theater did not show this movie but I keep meaning to rent the DVD. It got good reviews. Something that might interest you. Wonderful writing and the description of rural southern Italy in that hot summer of 1978 made took me back in time.

I wish I could give you some help with your trip. If you do get to Bari by any chance we stayed at the Ciga chain hotel in Bari which we liked very much.

When you are on the Adriatic coast Carol, assuming you like fish, I would encourage you to try to eat at as many beachside fish restaurants as you can. They are fantastic! I would think (in spite of the Euro) the prices would not be bad because you are going to be in a non-touristy area.

About my trip to Italy. I am either postponing it to autumn or putting it off until 2006. I have a rental house that I have to have the painted. Oh sigh, LOL.

Am going to Atlanta in April (with evidently a side trip to Charleston), a new area for me to see.

And will need to go to Portland OR and also Santa Barbara this year. So think that is all I can handle (money wise) for now.

But maybe, just maybe, I might go to Italy in October.

You are going to be in Italy twice this year, correct? Oh lucky you!

I will so look forward to your trip report. I am sorry I am not any help with the Puglia area. But hopefully someone else here on Fodor can offer some good advice.

Take good care.

Hi Carol, check out the "Puglia Intinery" thread that just popped up. This should be of interest to you!
