Planning a trip end of this year
I plan on traveling to Italy this September or October. I have two questions - are one of these months a better time to go?
Next - the main purpose of this trip is to bring my father to the village his parents grew up in which is Cirigliano in the region of Basilicata. We will visit other cities after here. Does anyone have any advice on the best way to get to Cirigliano as I know we'll have to drive there or get some sort of car service? Also, any insight on this village at all would be helpful.
Thanks!

I think that area is about the same in Sept and Oct but you can check weather.com to be sure. I suppose you will fly into Naples? And rent a car?
You probably won't get much information here because rarely are there any posts on that area and you didn't mention it in your title so people who do know will not be aware.
I know that area is beautiful and I would love to travel there myself in the near future. Maybe you should repost?

A follow up to SeaUrchin's post - you really should re-post w/ a better title. You don't mention Italy, let alone Cirigliano. "Planning a trip end of this year" coould be asking anything about anywhere in Europe.
But you also should probably check out http://www.cirigliano.org/ (There is an English language link)

Thanks to both of you for the idea to repost...good idea. Yes I plan on flying into Naples and renting a car. I have also checked out the cirigliano site but the english portion doesn't give you much info - everything I really wanted to see kept bringing me back to the italian part. I'll keep digging...thanks for responding!

castronova, I think the lack of general tourist interest in the area is exactly what is one of its plusses. I have been in Calabria and near where you will be and in most of the towns and even cities we were the only tourists.
Have a wonderful trip and I do hope you get some better information!!

hi castronova-
I am in the Naples area now, and am driving to the Basilicata tomorrow with a couple of Italian friends.
Sorry that I don't know anything about the village of Cirigliano. We are driving there but I think there are trains to Matera at least.
I think September would be a good time, but either month is probably good. Oh, I wish I could be of more help!
My only suggestion is that if you don't speak Italian, it would be good to hire a driver who can help you talk to the people in Cirigliano to get ancestral information, which will enhance the experience.
Best of luck to you!
