The crowds of the Vatican Museum made me MISERABLE. We did nothing but shuffle from one room to the next, peering around people's heads to get a glimpse at the art. I completely understand your concerns about taking your daughter, and I highly recommend the Borghese museum regardless of whether or not you choose to take her to the Vatican Museum.

kybourbon: I checked Select Italy this morning based on your posting and they still have the service; however, you are correct that the prices have increased. $77.00 now per person. We are planning a return visit next year and we will use the site you recommended. Thanks!

catherine - Last year the Vatican only allowed tour companies, not individuals, in between 8-10 which is why many companies started offering "bypass the line". This is no longer the case. I will be there the last Sunday of September (last Sunday each month the Vatican Museum is free) and will try the free admission. I expect big crowds. In the past, I've found the afternoon as the least crowded time. You can always take a break in the Vatican cafeteria or wander the outdoor courtyard.

kybourbon: Are you telling me that there is no way to bypass the lines at the Vatican now? Or is that just between the hours of 8-10am? Wow... That is horrible if you cannot "reserve" a spot and get around waiting in 4+ hour lines. Please let me know about your visit in September. Thanks...

All tours "bypass" the lines so to speak whether booked directly with the Vatican or an outside tour company.
What happened last year was the Vatican wasn't allowing entrance between 8-10 am except for tour companies that were registered with them. No one else was allowed in between 8010 so tour companies started selling "entrance tickets" to people that didn't really want a tour, but just wanted to get in during those hours without waiting in line. The Vatican cracked down on those companies and they no longer have the early entrance restriction. They also extended their winter hours. FWIW, there usually aren't long lines in the afternoons.

kybourbon: Got it. I think we had reservations for a tour at 10:00. We were able to skip the line and go right in but never did take the tour. I thought it very odd that tour groups were outside standing in lines. Glad to know that things have straightened out. However, I think next time we will do the tour but hire someone personally rather than in a large group. I know we missed a lot of great information.
Thanks for all the info...
