USNR: Yes Amsterdam Cenraal, one of my favorite stations is even a better example of deleterious planning - it sits not only on land filled in from canals but completely obliterated the classic view of the Port of Amsterdam and all the neat old Flemeish facades that still ring the front of the station.
But viewing the scene from across the Harbour one cannot see the classic old port but only the sprawling train shed - a huge curved glass train shed - lovely in itself but forever ruining the neat old facades that can no longer be seen from the seaside - the traditional entrance to Amsterdam thru the ages.

I like the York train shed.
But I can't believe nobody has mentioned London Paddington. It has probably the most amazing of the English train sheds, built by Isambad Kingdom Brunel at the height of the Victorian era.
And it even has the Paddington Bear.

OK..an "icon" even though in many ways it was and was not a "station" would be that building at Auschwitz...if THAT isn't a building that makes you think it is "such and such a place" to paraphrase Mr. Excitement, then nothing would be.

>>>Stockholm's main station is quite attractive -- clean, not too cluttered, multi-leveled, excellent connections to local surface and subway transportation. Did Saarinen design it?<<<
No, but Saarinen designed the above mentioned Helsinki railway station.
