Should the difficulties in Europe be reason enough to postpone my trip to Italy this June?

It's six months between now and June. Hopefully things will have calmed down by then.

I've recently booked a trip to Italy for late June 2012 and I'm certainly not going to postpone or cancel it.

As long as you are reasonably careful it shouldn't be any worse than any other European country.

DW and I are spending 2 weeks in Rome in February. I don't even see this as a problem. I've been around sizable demonstrations several times in Rome and was pretty amazed at how civil people are. Heck in the US if your city's sports team wins a championship then the city gets burned down. I'd say that Futbol can be more dangerous to attend than being around European demonstrators. Ever been to an automobile race? Watch out for those flying parts and burning bits, I know I got hit in the head with part of a burning tire at Daytona a few years ago.

My take, don't worry about it.

I'm off to Jordan and Israel in June 2012 and only missiles in the air would cause me to cancel!

Italy should be ok but I would take a little back pocket Dollars in case the currency folds for a few days.

Isreal in June, not so sure, it depends if the isreali secret service can keep up the bombs as per Isfahan this last week.

Um, I wouldn;t consider demonstration "unrest" - they're more like expressions of opinions (as in free speech). Large scale unrest would be something rioting with violence on both sides or bombings/shootings.

Italy is financially very bad off.

Monti their new PM is a technocrat world banker

which should help a lot.

but finding financial balance will be a tall order.

Simply have a good backup plan and good cover.

Personally am headed there in April and have no major concern.

? I thought that this must be a thread informing us about some riots that are happening now, not worries about a few demos. I'm not making light of your concerns, suz, but unless there is wide civil unrest, [which doesn't look very likely at present] I don't see that there's anything to worry about.

These were my thoughts too and not really of concern but my SIL told me I should think twice about going ( my fifth trip to Italy) and I value everyone's opinion

We are plannning a 3 week trip in October, and the only thing that might affect us is train strikes.

Suz, when we planned a two month trip to Italy in the 70's the Red Brigade was causing serious problems and the PM of Italy had been kidnapped. We had family members that almost had heart attacks because we didn't cancel our trip. It was a lovely two months. We did stay out of the areas where there were demonstrations from time to time but that is a good idea no matter where one is in my opinion. Go and have fun and enjoy planning your trip!
