Grazie Dick & WT. Too bad you missed the old town, WT; it's quite lovely. Also some wonderful views of the countryside from the top of the town.

Capo: I LOVED Cortona. I went as a day-trip from Perugia (since it is the closest Tuscan town to the Umbria border) and wasn't quite sure what to expect. I thought it would be over-run with ton of tourists because of the whole Francis Mayes connection, but was pleasantly surprised to find that there weren't many there at all. In fact, I met some Romans vacationing up there, as well as some Parisians, and of course, saw the ever-ubiquitious Germans, but no Americans. I went on Weds. August 27, that might have had something to do with it. The town had such a relaxed, laid-back air with friendly shops and storefronts that weren't all tourist shops hawking their wares. I will definitely return there some day........In the meantime, the movie will have to suffice until I can return (sigh).

Went to see it last night. I did not read the book, but enjoyed the movie a lot! My sister did read the book, and agreed that the movie was totally different, but said she liked the movie better. Apparently the main character in the book version seemed whiny?

I didn't find the main character whiny, but she did have a very able and willing husband to do a lot of the "superwoman" stuff that Diane Lane lacked.

The book focussed more on the renovation problems and less on "lonely woman seeking love."

Much more realistic; a much different story.

Where was the emphasis on food, herbs, cooking, recipes that were used so enjoyably throughout the book?

If Mayes can be filmed, perhaps the public is ready for the film version of Julia and Jacque's cookbook. It takes place in the privacy of Julia's kitchen, and Claudine turns out to be their love child. I could even suggest a title using the word appetite and the Americanization of bonne.

Just an idea.

Her near-orgasmic relationship with food was definitely missing. IIRC, she only cooked once, for the Polish laborers.

Orgasms had to come from elsewhere. ;-)

After seeing it last night, my feeling about this movie's story can best be expressed by the final word in the 1982 film starring Sting, Denholm Elliott, and Joan Plowright: Brimstone and Treacle.

As low as my expectations were -- for the story, not the scenery -- the movie did not even succeed in meeting them.

The scenery was great though. I loved the shot of the famous capello, flanked by two cypress trees, near Pienza, and the breathtaking shots of Positano. Didn't recognize anything in particular from the scenes in Cortona but it looked like many of them were filmed on the Via Nazionale which, I believe, is one of the few level streets in Cortona.

I'm sure that Raoul Bova, as Marcello, has set many female hearts a-flutter, and Diane Lane looked gorgeous, although in certain scenes she looked disturbingly like Kathie Lee Gifford. I kept expecting Regis to pop into Bramasole for a few wisecracks.

Koshka,

In the movie she cooks meal after meal for the laborers, getting more and more elaborate. "Near-orgasmic" wouldn't be inapropriate.

It opens here on Friday. I'll see it. i've seen enough movies and read enough books to know the film turns out to be a different slant. Take "a year in Provence." Law was so miscast, he still was acting like his inspector Morse role like they gave him the wrong script
And the actress was rather snotty compared to Mayle's wife in the book.

By the way, I always thought I came from the cabbage patch until nini

This is a little off the subject, but Frances Mayes also designed furniture for Drexel Heritage called At Home in Tuscany. Its suppose to be based off of the book and her Bramosole villa. In the book and movie she had no money left to purchase furniture etc. So alot of the furniture was donated and picked up here and there for very little. The furniture line is anywhere from $2000.00 for a console table to $10,000.00 just for an armoire. I don't get it. Thats oviously loosly based too.

Re: The couple next to us recognized the street of antique shops in Rome too.

Koshka, that street looked vaguely familiar but I wasn't sure if that scene was filmed on location or whether it was a set. Do you happen to know the name of the street, or the general area? Grazie! (The warm colors of the buildings, as shown in that scene, are one of the things I love about Rome.)

Re: I'd take a 9 year old in a heartbeat; I've seen more sex in a Victoria's Secret commercial.

*LOL*! Yeah, it was pretty tame in the romp n' roll department, wasn't it?

As I am planning a trip to Italy, I would like to see the movie for the scenery.

It's a good plus if the movie actors are good.

capo, I asked them but they didn't recall the name. Sorry.

But I believe I noticed the street name above in one of the shots as she's walking away. (I made a mental note of it and then promptly forgot)

Mi dispiace,
Koshka

Hmmm, the New Yorker pans a frothy chick flick.

PCHsmiles, can you really be surprised by this? It would be bigger news if they actually LIKED it! ;-)

The reviewer on CNN this morning said that when he left the theater, he felt like his "boobies were bigger and he had a sudden urge to cry".....LOL....
