Undecided - Lucerne hotels Expensive! Zurich instead?

Hi,
I am having a hard time deciding where to stay for 1 night in Switzerland. Looking for some advice.

We are staying in Lauterbrunnen for 3 nights. Then my plan was to go to Lucerne for 1 night. Then we leave the next night from Zurich on an overnight train to Rome.

I looked at hotels in Lucerne and they are very expensive for 4 people. I was considering staying in Zurich instead - hotels are cheaper overall. Plus I was going to try Priceline for a hotel. But that means a 50 minute train ride each way - on the day that we are taking the night train. Another option is to stay another night in Lauterbrunnen and then go for the day to Lucerne. We would have luggage and I am not sure if they have large enough lockers.

The reason for going to Lucerne is that my two children want to do the ropes course and the sled run there. I thought that it sounded fun too!

What do you think that my best option is? Should I bite the bullet and pay for Lucerne? Or save money and stay in Zurich?
Thanks,
Sandra

Try the Jail Hotel in Lucerne. I didn't stay there but did take a tour of the property. Kids will love it.

We stayed at Goldener Stern in Lucerne for a couple nights (2003) and would return to it again. It is very plain but clean and inexpensive. We walked to it (10-15 minutes, 800 meters) from the train station. Also walked from it to all our sightseeing in Lucerne.

Hotel de la Paix is also clean and plain, but a good price in Lucerne. The location is right by the entrance into the old city (near the main bus station). It is also a very close walk to the lovely lake and boats. Also, NH Lucerne is quite reasonable. It is located right across the street from De la Paix.

DH likes to stay in Lucerne, saying for him it is cheaper than Zurich for the last day or two before flying out of ZRH.

Thanks for the quick replies! I looked up the hotels that were mentioned. I am going to see if the Hotel Goldener Stern has availability for our July date. It received good reviews on Tripadvisor also. The downside is that it does not have A/C. Hopefully it will not be too hot.
Thanks for all the recommendations!
Sandra

Stayed at the Waldstaetterhof Hotel in Lucerne in 2004. Very central - 1 block from railroad and in walking distance of everything. Don't know what you want to spend - I think it was $150 US (with VAT, tax, service and breakfast included in price). Staff nice, and hotel very clean.
