danon: which apartments did you rent with spain-select? They are very nice looking on their website. I am looking at a few that are in the Austrias area. I know nothing about Madrid(yet) and wonder if this would be a good area to stay in.

we stayed
at Calle Mayor I several years ago. At the time, the apt. needed some "freshening up" The location was perfect and the building safe.
the second time, we stayed in the Carretas building ( a 2 bed.). The apt. was rather new , the bdm in the back.
Both locations are as central as you can get.
SS is a big company. The service was good.
If you have question about any location, just post the link .
I'll be glad to answer.

I researched spain select before/after they changed names.I don't think their new website is any clearer than their old one and compared to realista.com, niumba.com,homelidays.com they are very expensive!

We booked with SS for the first time in 2007, the second time just last year.. I don't know when they changed the name, but the new website is perfectly clear to me( as was the old one) .
We have not rented from other companies in Spain (except Habitat in Barcelona) - I cannot compare SS with others without actually having done so.

I have checked the Niumba site recommended by chapla, and there is an apartment in Almirante that looks interesting
http://www.niumba.com/comunidad-de-m.../madrid/315041.
Location is not bad, there are bars and restaurants in the area but not so noisy at night. If you walk down to Castellana, a mere two minutes, you can find the Recoletos cercanias train station that you can use to get to Nuevos Ministerios and then the metro to the airport.
5 minutes up, and you are in Chueca. For your shopping, you can go to the just reopened Mercado de San Antón, with gourmet shops, restaurants and a supermarket on the lower floor.

We are also looking at a long weekend in Madrid. Spain Select seemed like a good option -- cost seems less than two hotel rooms since there are five in our family. This is our first visit to Madrid. Besides the two apartments mentioned (in case they are already booked) which neighborhood should we focus on? Thanks!

I am posting a link from spain select with 3 apartments that look very nice and I think the neighborhood(s) may be good, but would like some advice from those of you who have knowledge of Madrid. Thanks.

You are welcome.
Callle Mayor is a very nice street. The building is around the corner from Plaza Mayor and close to the fantastic market. Cava Baja is several minutes walk.
Leon may be a quieter location , but in Nov. you'll probably keep the windows closed!
Next to the Palace is the Opera and several elegant cafe in a beautiful Plaza

I am still searching the internet for an apartment. I don't have a problem with the apartments that I am seeing, I just don't have any knowledge of Madrid and so am having trouble deciding on which area to focus on.
When we travel and rent apartments we like to stay in neighborhoods that are older and have some character. For example in Paris we stay in the Marais, although I am planning to branch out on our next visit there and look over by the Canal St. Martin. I like an older building with a remodeled apartment which has windows on the street, giving a view and lots of people watching opportunities.
I like a location that is fairly close to public transportation and easy to walk around in, safe, in other words. It would be important for the neighborhood to have at least one store to purchase food, etc. and small restaurants, pastry shops, etc. are also good.
We plan to use the metro from the airport, so the less complicated the route the better.
Has anyone stayed in Madrid and found a location with some of my criteria? I appreciate all of the replies that I have received so far. danon, what end of Calle Mayor did you stay on?

opaldog,
Barrio de las Letras , in the vicinity of Plaza santa Ana is good. Also the area near Plaza Mayor , might go by different names. We stayed at an apt in Plaza de la Paja rented through Spain Select. Why don't you post the links of the apts you're considering and we can comment.
