Have you found any apartments in the Chamberi area of Madrid? My daughter has just moved to Madrid and we liked this area- it seems to be a family orientated neighbourhood with lots of small independent shops, bars and cafes/restaurants. Good communications with bus and/or metro and a 10 min walk from Nuevos Ministerios transport hub which has direct metro link (Linea 8) to Airport.

Well, I clicked the mouse and reserved an apartment. Thanks to all for your suggestions and advice. bellini, I did consider Chamberi as it seemed like a nice area. We are only in Madrid for 4 nights and wanted to be very central.
I ended up with an apartment from spain select. It had everything I was looking for. It also looks from pictures to be nicely decorated and comfortable. It has the large, exterior windows that I want and nice old wooden parquet floors with modern amenities. Here is the link http://www.spain-select.com/en_US/re...s/callemayorii
If anyone wants to give me any tips or advice about Madrid in general it will always be appreciated.

The apt looks lovely and its well situated . Don't miss the churros and chocolate from Chocolateria San Gines, very close to where you are(google it for map, its off calle Mayor). I was pleased with my dealings with Spain Select, wish you good luck with your trip!

I just got back from Europe..sorry
We stayed in the same building.
The location is perfect: Plaza Mayor 2 min , Cava Baja about 5 min. a fantastic food market around the corner, the Opera and the Palace about 10 min.
You can walk ( about 20-25 min) or take the metro to museums.
Enjoy!

Thanks all, glad you approve. I made the choice with all of your input. danon, where were you in Europe? Do you ever do trip reports?
When I return in November I will post my review of the apartment and Madrid.

Yes, we did rent the Calle Mayor apartment. The noise was never an issue, although the windows and shutters were closed at night and we could still hear people out and about at the very early hours of the morning. We also stayed out late so it didn't bother us. However if I had stayed longer I may have wanted an apartment on a street removed from the action.
The apartment was great, very comfortable and nicely furnished. From the balcony we could see Puerta del Sol and the masses of people at night and most of the day on weekends. On Sunday morning a road race of thousands went right by the apartment. I would definitely recommend the apartment.
