U.K.: Sept/Oct....Pack...???

Off to UK last week in Sept and first week in October. Of course, want to pack very light. Should I pack mostly for cool weather and mix in some minimal warm weather? How cool? Thanks in advance for your experienced tips!

Pack for cool. Even in July it's only in the 70s. Expect to wear sweaters/sweatshirts and jeans everywhere, even in London. Definitely take a rain jacket, and maybe something heavier. It doesn't get very cold at night (the range might be 50s-60s).
Robin, definitely take a small umbrella. Waterproofing your shoes might also be a good idea. We went last Oct for 23 days and it rained for about 18 of them but we did not let it spoil the enjoyment of our trip - we just adapted. Sept/Oct in the UK is a time for layering your clothing. Some days may get up to (but not over) the 70's some nights into the 40's (we saw frost in Chester) You can pick up some great deals on English wool sweaters at Marks and Spencers which is a very large, reasonably priced chain so you may want to buy some of your warm weather gear over there.

Pack lots of t-shirts! Layers are the way to go! I've been there at various times of the year and this holds true regardless of the season. Throw in a heavyweight sweatshirt/sweater(s) for good measure. I agree with the other replies, take a small umbrella and/or raincoat. I always pack loads of socks just incase I encounter puddles! Jeans will get you into most places, so you may only want to pack one full dressier set. And remember, if you don't have it, you can get it there!!
The last few autumn trips we've taken, I've packed a couple of pairs of slim pants, black and dark brown, and silk turtlenecks in 3 colors. I mix and match them with scarves, etc. They don't take up much room, and with a raincoat and dark sweater for layering have worked great.

Great responses, I just love this forum. Everyone is so helpful and polite. Have yet to see any trash, so nice compared to other forums where one is trying to get some genuine information.

Agree with all of the above. Layers are definitely the way to go - especially if everything matches everything else. I bought a raincoat with a hood making an umbrella unnecessary. Be sure to take an extra pair of shoes. Even waterproof shoes can get pretty damp and need a day to dry out.

A couple years ago, in London it was in the low 80s and sunny in late and June and when we made it to Edinburgh a week later, everyone was wearing wool (temps in upper 50s fehrenheit)and it rained everyday for about 8 days. I agree with all the posts and just want to point out the extremes we found on our trip.
