Nothing particularly human about basing your economy on slave labor, either.

Were you referring to Ancient Greece, or perhaps the US, where slavery was abolished less than 150 years ago? ;-)

Portugal is an awesome place. Actually the two biggest cities Oporto and Lisboa are on the european travel destination 2012. Oporto won it this year and Lisbon made it a couple of years ago. Other that this two beautiful cities, Portugal's have different and beautiful medieval places to visit. And very good wine and seafood, if you are interested in any of those

Hope you come here, is a very nice place to be!

Greece is the shining inspiration and fountain of art and culture (and food!) for Europe over and over again, and ultimately for the political creation of America too, and it still is for people who go to see it today. Never has there been a more human and amazing culture.>

This all could be said about a lot of cultures - Amerika got its democratic values from the Age of Reason in Paris and France not from ancient Greece though the French were influenced by them I'd say - I do wonder how 'democratic' an ancient Greece was where women were second-class citizens not involved in the democratic process at all I think - and yes Greeks had plenty of slaves I think too - and brutal repressions of rebellions and constant civil wars - this is your shining example. As for food Greek foods have limited impact in today's Europe - nothing like French and Italian or even German or Middle East it seems - and the way modern Greeks often treat their ancient treasures to me is appalling - lot better in recent years but when I first went things were awful at classical sites with locals even openly selling bits and parts of ancient Delphi when I was there.

Greece and Greeks have a historic storied ancient culture but it weren't all a bed of roses but one with plenty of thorns in it. Why was Aristotle forced to kill himself - was that Greek democracy at its best?

He and many other wealth folks sexually abused young boys and were rarely bothered - is that a cultural tradition you boast about?

Unfortunately ( for you ) Greece is the mother of democracy, of Arts and Philosophy, want it or not western civilization dates back to Ancient Greece....
Your language has a plethora of greek words...
Trying to judge Ancient Greece with the standards of 2012 sounds like a bad joke...
Your post is more of a try to find negative things about a nation with great history and presence...

Greece is a great nation but it ain't - i guess the part about never being a more humane culture is what got me - there have been many many cultures more humane than Greeks - constant war is that humane? But I agree I was too harsh perhaps and that yes we owe a lot to ancient Greece!

You should definitely go to Nice!! I spent four months there, and it is truly one of my favorite places. It's beautiful and a great base for cities such as Monaco, Cannes, Eze Village, and Antibes. Also, I would recommend going to Prague or Budapest for a more complete view of Europe, rather than just the Western countries. Spain is wonderful, spend a couple of weeks there for sure. As far as Italy , there are so many places to see, and each one unique, so you can't go wrong. If you're spending a lot of time there, besides Rome, Florence, and Venice, the South is also fantastic. Spend a couple days on the Amalfi coast if you can! Another country I would recommend if you have time is Ireland, as it's beautiful, and different than the Latin countries. Visit the Guiness factory, see the Cliffs of Moher; you really can't go wrong!!

Robert, your post got hijacked!

I wanted to ask where you are planning on starting your trip, as that would probably be a logical place to start planning where you will go.

I travelled across Europe for 2 months while I was a university student - and it was probably the most amazing and meaningful travel experiences I have had to date. As a testament to that, I still remember my itinerary (mostly) 10 years later: (NOTE: travel mostly by train, with a few flights)

started in London
then to Amsterdam
to Paris
overnight train to the south of france - nice, cannes, monaco etc
San sebastian (a must see, IMO)
barcelona (also a must see)
(NOTE: we skipped most of spain because there's a lot of travel time between cities, but went back a few years later and spent a month in spain and portugal)
Switzerland - spent a few days hiking and adventuring in Interlaken
Italy - Venice, Rome, Florence, Cinque Terra, Amalfi Coast (spent less time in each place to see more - ALL AMAZING)
Greece - spent 7 days "island hopping" and relaxing - spent 1 day in Athens.

A few caveats:
1) I went in May and June, so the weather was good and we spent some days scattered throughout the trip on the beach
2) I went back to Europe the following summer and spent 4.5 weeks travelling through Eastern Europe - Germany, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic and Croatia - also an AMAZING trip and highly recommend it - but too hard to do everything in one go

Once you have narrowed down where you would like to go, I'm sure people can help with specific sights in each city.

Happy planning!
