Tuscany—small hill towns and less visited sights
Hi
We are renting a house in Castellina in Chianti for a week this October. We are looking for some towns or sights to visit that are not the standard in guidebooks. This is our 3rd visit so have visited the major towns and will probably revisit some of them. We like the outdoors, touring a vineyard, walking the backroads, etc. if you have any suggestions please provide.
Thank you

“Walking a the back roads”
decent bookshops shops will sell the Kompass 1:25000 map of each area of Tuscany. It includes ancient cart tracks and paths. We found some incredible views and fascinating local characters using the tracks in the Crete Senesi area, particlaurly around Montisi. Managed to join local farmers who were truffling with dogs.

Since you are going to stay in Castellina, fairly near is La Badia di Coultibuono, restaurant and winery. We visited way back in 2000, but had a lovely lunch al fresco at their excellent restaurant, then toured the monastery converted to the family winery and garden. We were the only two in this little tour. It was interesting and garden was lovely. This is the ancestral home of Lorenna di Medici, of the famous family, and excellent cook book author. If the restaurant is still popular and as good as it was, you will need advance res.

Ceramice Rampini is the best quality ceramics I've seen. I almost bought a set, but didn't have a way to haul it along on the trip with me. The salesperson told me I could order from home later and just have it shipped. When I got home, I called and tried to order the design I wanted. Found out the price doubled, plus shipping on top of that. Needless to say, that purchase didn't happen!
Moral of the story - if you see what you like, buy it there and have it shipped.
