Lorac, so it makes sense to train from Venice to Florence in the am, rent a car there and have a relatively easy trip down to Palazzo del Capitano near Pienza? What time does it get dark in
the summer? Many thanks. BTW, I wrote 'San Gimi' so I wouldn't have to look up the spelling--didn't want to mangle the name.

Poggibonsi is an Italian word that means " really lousy signage so all the stupid tourists will get lost". It is not bad coming in from the " nord" exit--only 3 turns with signs that say San Gim. if you pay attention. But, getting back on to the superstrada is a real challenge. I always just go south fron San Gim. and catch S-68 back to the highway.

Actually, for the record, we NEVER got lost going through Poggibonsi towards San Gimignano. (I do know how to spell it, in case you were wondering.) But we always got lost coming back towards the superstrada, as BobtheNav says. I will have to remember that trick, Bob -- thanks!

annealex, we were undecided about whether to drive from Tuscany to Venice or not. I was crazy trying to make the "right" decision. But then there was a train strike that day and the decision was made for us. We drove and everything worked out fine.
Taking the train does allow you to relax and to be refreshed when you arrive to pick up the car.
Sunset is probably around 9:00, give or take a few minutes during the summer depending on which month.
Bob, you are a panic. That's why we always get lost--even if it's for a short time. The signs need to be simplified...but then again, it's Italy... Your definition reminds me of the Bruno Bozzetto flash movie ( http://www.lifeinitaly.com/flash/ )..."Road Signals" is exactly why so many of us get lost in Italy.

Thanks all. Our itinerary is set. Venice: Hotel Flora to Tuscany's Capitano to Florence's Hotel Casci which this board likes. Bob gets the prize for suggesting the wow-looking B & B Palazzo del Capitano. Thanks so much. Annealex

annealex, we happened upon the Hotel Flora when in Venice...here is a photo: http://www.slowtrips.com/photo/showphoto.php?photo=5527
If I remember correctly, the area is quiet yet close to San Marco...ah, Venice...you will have a fabulous time!
