TG: I too, am now a fan of yours! I read your reports with gusto. I had a "carpet experience" of a much gentler nature in Kusadasi. Of course the guy wouldn't let me leave and kept plying me with delicious apple tea. I am a "born to shop" kind of gal, and I couldn't leave without seeing absolutely everything. I finally made a wonderful choice of a silk rug which had an unusual design and color (I'm not into the traditional red and blue rugs). It was a beautiful soft salmon color. I lugged it all the way back to CA all folded up in my suitcase (it was about 4x6). The funny thing was, about a year later I got a call from this rug salesman. He said he was in Santa Barbara and could he stop by while he was "in the neighborhood" and show me some rugs. My husband wasn't too thrilled and so I had to decline. Though very persistent, the guy was really very nice. My brother in law, who is from Istanbul, is a wonderful guy. It's too bad he's become so "American". My nephew has taught him our slang and now he just loves to sit with the guys in front of the tv with a beer and watch a ball game!He is so excited that my sister and I want to go to Turkey. He has been telling us all the wonderful things about it for years, and to be able to actually show them to us is fantastic. Sadly, we only have a few days in Istanbul, as our main focus is on Italy, but I know with all the suggestions out there and Omer's input, it will be memorable!

Thanks, I'm sure we will, what with your restaurant and sightseeing recommendations. Still trying to pick a hotel. Julie likes big and modern, I want to feel the "old world" charm of the city and prefer smaller, boutique hotels. We are sooo different! We once met at a hotel in Boston and Jul exclaimed "You look like you belong here, I look like I'm "working it".
Get the picture? We joke that if she dies first, I'll dress her in beige linen, she says she'll dress me in red leather! Despite our diffences, we do laugh a lot when we're together.
