Yes, if you get on at the airport, there is no problem with rush hour. But if you have to change trains (and Travelpat would), that's another matter.
Plus, again, I speak as a parent who has the double duty of not only finding one's way, but shepparding children, in a busy city....not impossible, but not particularly easy either.

How To Change Trains (with thanks to ben_haines_london):
Get on the Tube at Heathrow (there's only one line, and it only goes one way). Get off at Hammersmith.
Walk across the platform (8 yards) and get on the next District Line train going to Upminster.* Get off at Embankment.
* This is the only slightly tricky part. Some lines have several endpoints, and you have to make sure that you take the train going to the right one.
p.s. (And I mean this in the most friendly way) if shepherding children in a big city is a concern, only a little of it will be avoided by not riding the Tube to Westminster.

Actually, unless there has been some major emergency, all eastbound District Line trains from Hammersmith will go to Embankment. And if for some reason one isn't going to do so, there should be plenty of information about alternative arrangements.

This map makes it look as though there is a branch at Earl's Court that goes "eastbound" to either Edgeware Road or Upminster.
