Tropea Accomodations

Many of you have mentined the town of Tropea, in Southern Italy as being a great place to stay. We are thinking of making a stop over either there or any other small coastal town in that area that you may recommend. Any specific hotel recommendations for Tropea or nearby coastal town?

SallyJo,
Tropea is a beautiful little town. Last summer we stayed at Hotel Terrazo Sul Mare, on Via Croce. We had a spacious room with a little terrace overlooking the Tirrenean Sea. Unfortunately, they do not have a web site. We just made our reservation over the phone. Their number is 0963/61020.
While in the area, do not miss Capo Vaticano, and Santa Maria Beach just south of Tropea. You will love it!
Have a great trip!

How did you find out about it? I've gotten spoiled with websites. You get to at least see what you're getting. What was the price per night? We will need a double. Also, is English spoken? My Italian is pretty limited.

We discovered the hotel on a previous trip - just drove by while looking for a place to stay. It is a 2-3 star hotel, not luxurious, but comfortable and clean. The price last year for a triple with breakfast was 80 euros. The location is good, you are about 5-6 blocks from the center of town. To get to the beach, you can directly descend through stairs on the cliff, or drive around the cliff with your car. Not sure about the language...We spoke italian but I think that some English was spoken.

Hi Sally Jo - we stayed near (5 km or so) Tropea last Fall at Hotel Villagio Stromboli. It was the final (unplanned) 2 nights of our holiday and we didn't have reservations.

We sort of stumbled upon Villagio Stromboli - and it was very nice. Like many of the hotels in the area, it's a 'resort' style of hotel (in fact we found few small hotels). It's on a cliff overlooking the sea, with a beautiful beach down a path (I think you can take a golf cart down or up...but it's not that bad a walk). Our room had a lovely view of the sea and...in the distance...Stromboli...hence the name.

For 2 nights, including breakfast and dinner both nights (although you didn't have to take dinner and, if you didn't take dinner it would be less) it was $200 US. The food was....fine....no big high notes, but quite nice. Many of the other guests were German (and most of them spoke flawless English....why do I only speak one language?!) and we had lively discussions during the cocktail hour before dinner each night.

Here's a link to a web site with pictures of Villagio Stromboli (it's in German)

http://www.tropea.biz/hotel_stromboli.htm

...and, I can e-mail you pictures if you're interested. My E-mail is [email protected]

Otherwise, in Tropea I would highly recommend Pimm's Restaurant - it's right by the "balcony" in Tropea - a lovely location that overlooks the sea. The food was excellent - 110 Euro for lunch...but we did go a little crazy.

Tropea and Calabria were somewhat surprising for us....much lusher than we had expected....we'd definitely return.

One thing I forgot to mention re Villagio Stromboli in answer to a question you posed - most of the front desk staff and many of the restaurant/bar staff spoke English.

Re: Tropea restaurants, we loved Ristorante Il Normanno. Located in the historic center of town, just steps from the cathedral. Great "al fresco" dining in a beautiful courtyard overlooking the mountains, delicious food and unexpensive - dinner for three about 60 euros.

As I look up many of the websites for Tropea, many of them are in German, with no English version. Why is this?
