I keep missing replies, sorry. The hotels that we stayed at in Rome and Venice were very standard. They were both clean and in decent locations. We got a late start on hotel reservations at the time, so I'm sure there are better. We stayed at Hotel Mercurio in Venice which had a great location, that was the best part of it. They were very helpful and the room was very basic but clean.
In Rome we stayed at Hotel Flavia which was very basic as well, but the street it was on was very quiet, with a few decent restaurants to choose from. It was close to terminal which was nice because we walked from the train to the hotel, however, it was a lot of walking from the hotel to other areas of Rome.

Five women from Atlanta doing Tuscany for a week starting Sept 12. Staying at Villa Bambini (Leone Heinzman's villas). My doctor says restaurant LaChiuya, chef Dania Masotti, in Montefollonico (Siena) is a must. Do you know of this restaurant? We are using your suggestions for the shorter and longer day trips. Our MUSTS are Siena, Florence, Montepulciana/Pirenza, and Pitigliano/Sovana/Sorano. Since we do want to see David in Florence, can we do the town by leaving by 7am and staying to return late at night. We'll short day trip from villa the following day.
