Good base in Tuscany?

Any suggestions for a base in southern or eastern Tuscany?

We recently stayed in Lucignanello d'Asso near San Quirico and Pienza but it was in the middle of nowhere down a very rough dirt road. This time, we'd like to base ourselves in a town so that we have the option to go to a restaurant and not have to drive home after.

We fell in love with Pienza, but maybe it is a little small though for a base. Also considering Montepulciano. We visited it before, but very very briefly. Any other ideas?

Hi M,

On my last trip I stayed in Montalcino for 3 nights and loved it. I also wanted to be able to walk to restaurants. Loved Grappolo Blu!

I also stayed in Spello in Umbria for 2 nights and it was wonderful. Palazzo Bocci and their restaurant, Il Molino, are excellent!

Buon viaggio!

Montepulciano is just big enough to keep you interested for several days and is a great base for southern Tuscany.

I've styed in Montalcino a few times and also at agriturismos nearby.I really loved staying there.A couple great restaurants for the evening also.
What time of year are you going? Montalcino becomes pretty dead in Oct. in the evening.
I tend to think that Montepulciano might be a better size if you stay for more than 4 nights.
