travelnut,

I've always enjoyed reading your trip reports, and I was glad to read this one as well. Thanks for putting up all your pictures - I liked your photo of the Eiffel Tower on a cold day...the weather must have not been great, but the fog adds a bit of mystery that I love. Also love your beautiful pictures of Norte Dame and the Place de Concorde. I'll bite...what was the bridge you were looking at on the Ile de Cite?

Question about your asian delis - I've seen you recommend them before and I always wondered...do you go back to your favorite ones, or just ones in your neighborhood? It could be the area's I've stayed in, but I don't think I've ever run into any.

What's a grec sandwich?

Never realized there was a art market at the Bastille on Saturdays - was it so good that you would return again?

Would you do the hot air balloon again? I'm afraid of heights(so I don't think I could do it), but my friends might be interested in doing it. Was it to far away from most Paris sites to have good views of anything?

Great detailed report, thanks! I'm interested about your mini-laptop. We have considered buying one for travel (light to carry) but wonder how hard it is to type on a small keyboard. Is it any different from a normal size keyboard? Also, anything else you like or dislike about it?

Many thanks for any tips.

Anna, thank you.... I figured out I was standing on Quai de la Tournelle looking at Ile St Louis, so I guess it is the Pont de la Tournelle... We go to the same Asian place on rue Daguerre every visit, which is why the owner recognizes us. We've stopped in the occasional one in other locations - once in the 15th, and near d'Orsay in the 7th ... I think they're fairly ubiquitous.... a 'sandwich Grec' is like a schawarma, or pita sandwich with the shaved meat in it... The Art Market wasn't real large, but it had a nice variety of products. You could pair it with the one at Edgar-Quinet on Sunday mornings...The Ballon is pretty tame, rises very slow and is tethered. You can see from one of the photos how far the Eiffel looked. It's kind of a 'ok, did that' experience but isn't the best view over Paris (which is Tour Montparnasse, in my opinion)....

Kay, there are several good models of mini-laptop... I followed the Acer and the newer Dell mini-9 on Ebay for a few weeks but could never get a 'deal' as they seem to auction for retail or higher. Saw an ad in the CompUSA flyer one Sunday for $50 off retail, so bit the bullet, plus had it in my hands within 5 minutes rather than waiting for a shipment. I am very pleased with it for travel purposes and to use as a 2nd pc at home. I've had no trouble using the keyboard or touchpad. The screen resolution (which I imagine can be adjusted) is about as small as I'd be comfortable using for fun. I would not recommend this size pc for full-time work tasks - I think eyestrain would be an issue. We used it to get on the Internet (weather, email, some bank business), and I wrote my trip report on the plane trip home, as well as edited about 1/2 the photos I'd taken. I installed my own discs of MS Office and the photo-edit software by copying them to a 4-gb USB drive, then installing from the USB drive to the mini. I think both those program files took about 1 gb space on the USB drive. The Acer has a multi-card reader and 3 USB drives, so plenty of places to add 'storage'. It operates at a good speed - uses Windows XP Home. I liked having the opportunity to dink around on one at the store, and recommend you try one out before buying to see if the screen and the keyboard are acceptable to you. I also bought a laptop locking cable and a 'DVD player' carrying case for it.

Thanks to everyone who commented, and glad you enjoyed reading another report about Paris !

Lovely photos especially the Eiffel tower decked out in the colours of the European Union flag!

What a nerve wracking start to the trip. I was relieved you made your original connection after such a palaver. Thanks for writing a report.

Great trip report. I loved your photos. I will definitely have to check out Monsieur Lespagnol's stall at the art market when I go. I took a look at the link you provided and really liked his work.

Travelnut, I really enjoyed your pictures. A charming carousel we ran across is in the tiny children's park in the block down from Le Bon Marche dept. store in the 7th. We love to watch the French children play there. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks Travelnut, for the laptop info. I'll show my technical minded husband and maybe we'll splash out and buy one. The laptop we have is so heavy to carry around but they are useful to have with you on trips.

Best wishes
Kay

Really enjoyed your TR and pix! Yes, great to have something fun to do on the plane ride home.

Your experience with airlines at the beginning incredible!

We have stayed at a place on Rue du Cherche Midi (Gounod) that sounds like Sophie. Seen better days but wonderful people.
