Travelling in Corsica

We will be travelling to Corsica in May and are wondering about car rentals and if we need to reserve a room before we go?

Adelle---
It's always best to reserve a room so you will be able to count on what you want, rather than having to accept whatever is available when you get there. I don't know how you are planning to go, but if you fly there I would recommend flying from Nice to Ajaccio. You can rent a car from any of the major car rental agencies in Ajaccio, and it's a pretty nice place to start your vacation. You'll definitely need a car if you want to enjoy Corsica, and you can drive to the southern tip and take your car on a ferry to Sardinia if you wish. A drive around Sardinia, and a stay for a night or two, is definitely worthwhile if you go to Corsica. For a hotel in Ajaccio, there is a nice place on the water, southwest about 8 km from the city, called Dolce Vita. It's a great hotel with wonderful views and an incredible restaurant. Their phone is 95-52-00-93. Fax is 95-52-07-15. Another very nice hotel on the same road is the Eden Roc, phone 95-52-01-47. A lower-priced hotel in town is the Hotel Fesch, phone 95-21-50-52. Hope this helps. You will love the Corsican countryside and the rugged hills and coast.

Wayne, what useful information. I printed it out to save in my Corsica file. It's this kind of detailed, first-hand info that makes this site so useful. Thanks.

I'm not sure where you're headed to Corsica from. We are renting a car for a couple of months from AutoFrance starting in Nice. I was surprised that the cost for two of us plus the car by fast ferry from Nice to Bastia on Corsica was only $133 US -- it would be half that without the car, probably a lot cheaper than flying. If you need a car for 17 days or longer, it might be worth it to get the car in Nice, as the initial checking I did for car rentals in Corsica was very high. We've booked stays in Erbalunga, Calvi, Ajaccio, and Bonifacio, before going on to Sardinia. Corsica sounds beautiful and I'm looking forward to it.
Nice hotel information, Wayne. Where were you when I was asking this question last fall?? I plan way ahead!

Adelle--
Patrick is correct. It's certainly true that you can rent a car in Nice and go by car ferry to Corsica; it's just that I prefer to travel that kind of distance more rapidly. Even with the airport delays, I tend to avoid ferries for long trips. Taking the car ferry from Corsica to Sardinia, on the other hand, is easy and quick because the islands are so close.

Patrick---sorry I didn't see any of your questions earlier. Nice to see someone who plans well in advance.

we spent about 2 weeks in Corsica in July of 2000. We took a ferry from outside Rome to Sardinia spent several days in the south before traveling by ferry to Bonifacio. We traveled around the island by car staying many different places without a reservation for hotels or car rental. We were not disappointed only by the fact that we had to leave. Some of the driving is a bit hairy. DO NOT MISS THE red rocks area we stayed in an old hotel built by the Rothchilds ...I think.
On the top floor, no elevator, but the view was unreal. Again without a reservation. We also took the train to the center, Corte??? If I remember correctly and had a bit of trouble finding a room, if I remember it was a weekend. Corsica is wonderful if you have an adventurous spirit.
Lynne
