Sardinia and Corsica car rentals and public transport

Does anyone have the low down on car rentals in Sardinia and Corsica. We're getting a lot of conflicting information. The only thing we know is that you can't take a rental car from Sardinia to Corsica, i.e. you have to rent a separate car in Corsica. So here are my questions:

If we rent a car in Cagliari or somewhere else on the south end of Sardinia, and drive it north, can we drop it off somewhere near the ferry that goes to Corsica?

And is there a drop charge associated with not taking it back to Cagliari?

Any and all information greatly appreciated.

You can ask if it's possible to drop off the car in santa Teresa, the place where you take the ferry to Corsica. Ask to Hetz, Europe Car and other famous ones. Some rentals allow you to do it, just write them a mail or call and ask. Unfortunately finding a rental that allows you to take the car to Corsica is difficult, for them is expensive to take it back.
