Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement and tips for travel!! I've become addicted to this website as of late. I wish I had known about it before my trip to England a couple of years ago!!
I've travelled by myself quite a bit in the US, but never ventured out alone in a foreign country. There's always a first time, right?
I wish my poor hubby was as encouraged. He's a worry wort, especially in light of developments overseas. I told him if I'm gonna go, at least I'll go happy. It was already a bit for him to digest my going over with the group of ladies I'm travelling with for the first part of my trip.
Thanks again everyone. I'll write a trip report when I get back, but that will be in October. Until then, I'll keep pouring over the website for your helpful hints and advice.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one traveling alone. I will be in rome in late october, staying 4 days there, then off to assisi, venice and pompeii. At first i thought - i'm crazy - but my confidence level is rising after pouring over this forum and reading all of your wonderful advice and experiences. i know i'll have a great time

I feel that it is safe to be alone in Rome. I took two weeks solo trip to Italy and never had any trouble. In Rome and Florence, 3-4 blocks from the main train station areas was even safe. (Not so in Naples.)
If you only have 2-3 days, take taxis not busses. make resservations everwhere you can. This will decrease travel time and wait time.
A couple of suggestions though. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings, be wary of anyone approaching you without permission, be confidant, walk with a purpose and do not look lost.

I, too, am going to Rome alone, from mid-October to hopefully mid-January. I've been to Rome before, and think it's fairly safe to be on your own. Just be aware of what's going on around you. It's great to know there will be others traveling on their own!

This October will be my 5th trip to Rome. Two of those were solo. Rome is a wonderful city for solo travellers. You will be able to meld into the crowd very easily. I have never felt unsafe and I am out to dinner, walking around in the evenings. As mentioned before, just be aware of your surroundings and follow your instincts, just like you would at home. My first solo trip I stayed at Residenza San Pantaleo, which was just around the corner from P. Navona, great location and at the time it was very reasonable at 71€ for a single. My second solo trip this last March I stayed in an apt.(in Trastevere, right on P. Santa Maria in Trastevere) which I rented through Real Rome - www.realrome.com This was the second apt. I've rented through this agency and I will be going through them again this Oct. The apts so far have been great and Tim Pearson is so easy to deal with. I now prefer to stay in apts. It gives you a feel of how it might be to actually live in Rome. It might not be for everyone as you do not have a concierge and you are basically on your own. I love being able to shop at the market, and have simple meals in my apt. if I want to, or at least snacks. This Oct. I will be there with 5 other women and we have three apts. in the same bldg. Should be interesting! I have a feeling next year, I will be going it solo again. You will have a wonderful time - there is just no place on earth quite like Rome,.... except maybe Paris, lol.
