Only two days in Rome? Oh, my!
Well, early in the morning go to Campo de' Fiori, to see the market, then spend the rest of the morning with a fast look at the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Forum. Have. lunch. Go to the Pantheon and Piazza , Spanish Steps and Fountain of Trevi in the afternoon. after dinner, revisit the fountains to see them at night, which is very pretty.
The next day tour the Vatican and St. Peter's.
Don't linger anywhere or you won't get to it all.

Is that the entire trip? IMHO way too much travel time for the little sightseeing time you would have. If it were me I would stay in Rome and do a long day trip to Florence. Otherwise you will be running constantly to catch up and won't have time to see even the most important sights.
We started taking our girls when they were younger - teen/tween - and always did at least 5 nights for larger cities - and 3 night for smaller. They learned to really appreciate Europe and the differences in the way of life and both are now travel hounds with friends (the 20 year old) or fiance (the 23 year old).
