Traveling in Spain

Author: kelexsmom

I will be traveling with my 19 year old daughter in Spain May 2007. What is the best way to get around? We will be starting in Barcelona (she will be finishing a semester studying abroad) and would like to see the south, Granada, Seville, etc. Also, I heard that we can take a ferry to Morocco.Anyone try this?

How you get around will depend on what you want to see and do and how much time you have to do it in. You can fly between Barcelona and Sevilla, take the train to Granada, or try the bus. If you want to see some of the white villages, etc., then you would be better off with a car once you reach Sevilla.

The bus sytem in Spain is more extensive because the train system is not as well develop as other European countries. And the buses are great. Depending on where you are going, don't ignore the bus ass a possibility.

Kelexsmom, you can surely take a ferry to Tanger from Algeciras (Cadiz), about 200-250 kms. from Sevilla. But the must in Morocco is said to be Marrakesh, not Tanger indeed. Easyjet.com has recently launched low-cost flights from Madrid to Marrakesh and to Casablanca that most probably are not much more expensive than ferry boat.
If you choose the ferry trip, make sure that you take the fast one. It is more expensive, but it will save you time.

I prefer driving. At the end of the day if you take buses you have to pay taxi fares from bus stations that are some times a little far. Same with trains. lately we opted for a combination of car+train, to get out and to get in big cities we take a train to our first destination from there we d rive and then return the car in an a small city.
This year we took a train to Jaen and from there we drove leaving the car in Seville, then train to Madrid.
Next year we will take the car in Burgos and leave it at Salamanca. From Barcelona same thing can be done easily. There is nothing like the car, so much mobility. You have to consider too the parking some times you can leave it easily in zonas azules , paying little parking or in municpal parkings.

We've booked a couple flights on www.vueling.com for our trip in Feb. We got 1way tickets from Madrid to Granada and Seville to Barcelona for 20-25 euro.
