Traveling from Venice to Geneva

Greetings- I am looking for guidance and this looks like a great place to get real advice.
We are traveling in late december and staying in Venice - our flight is out of Geneva -honestly I don't know why - we listened to a "friend" - but it is what it is .
Now to get from point A to point B - we leave our hotel on the29 of dec and fly out 8AM on the 30th .
We have look at train but from the website i saw there is not direct route (and we will have luggage to schlep around .
Would anyone recommand we drive? looks like maybe a 6 hour car ride ? any suggestions are more than appreciated

Too bad you listened---this will not be easy.
Forget driving---the surcharge would kill you.
The train will be a long haul but doable---look at bahn.de for the routes and times.
Also look at flights to Geneva or possibly Zurich from Venice.

If you drive, you know Dec 29th is in winter and requires winter driving over the mountain?
Looks like Darwin and Easyjet fly Venice to Geneve direct, but according to www.whichbudget.com, there is no flight on 12/29, but you must get to Geneve on 12/28.

By any chance your "friend" recommended Geneve because that was what your "friend" used for another trip completely irrelevant to your itinerary?

There is an EC train from Venice to Geneva that doesn't involve changes, but it doesn't get in until after midnight. Trenitalia will not have schedules for December yet (winter schedules start in Dec., but won't get loaded until closer to the date). To see possibilities, enter a date before Dec. You might try Venice/Geneve or Venice/Milan and Milan/Geneve (select smart fare for discount on this ticket).

Lots of train connections via changes at Brig and or Milan - about hourly or so and in Switzerland a rather scenic ride - and in northern Italy as well. check www.sbb.ch for Swiss prices and www.trenitalia.com for Milan to Venice fares and to book online discounted fares.

Regular fare you can always buy in Geneva without any problem but you may be able to save by booking ahead of time and getting discounts that however may be hard to impossible to change or refund so be sure of your time.

For lots of great stuff on European trains check out these superb IMO sites - www.seat61.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com.

Also look at flights to Geneva or possibly Zurich from Venice>

Flying to Zurich would mean the day before because if you have an 8am flight out of Geneva you'd have to leave Zurich by train say around 3 or 4am perhaps.

if flying the day before take the train - it is a really sweet scenic journey and you see some of the finest Swiss Alps.

Flying the same day would only work to Geneva and then still a really really early start - not practical.
