Thanks for the helpful information.
Janis, I agree that we need to see more of London, and I must have been unclear on our tentative plans.
We only want to be out of the city about a day and a half, with full day to either Bath or Warwick, and half day to Hampton Court. Big cities are fascinating, but sometimes I think we need a break in the countryside to appreciate them.
Robespierre,
Thank you for the helpful transportation information! Sounds like the 7-day travelcard would make sense. But I'm confused - I thought it covered buses also. Is there a different pass that covers all modes of transportation?

The Day Travelcard is valid on the Tube, buses, trams, and trains within its zones.
The Bus Pass is valid only on buses, but anywhere in Greater London.
Absent any compelling reason to travel by Tube, I'd opt for the latter.

Hagan: That is different - one daytrip makes a LOT more sense. I honestly don't condiser Hampton Court Palace a "day trip" in the same way. it is definitely worthwhile - but you can do HCP and something else in London the same day. HCP is basically in a suburb of London in zone 6 and you can get there in about 30 minutes. If you go in the morning you will be back by mid afternoon.
As for the Warwick/Bath decision - Warwick is a terrific castle and if you had longer you could combine it w/ Stratford-upon-Avon and a bit of the Cotswolds.
But w/ just a day, I probably recommend Bath. It is a cpmpact and very walkable city and with the Roman Baths, the Abbey, good restaurants and the beautiful architecture/river/gardens it is a really good day trip by train from London.
