Travel to Positano
Hi there,
I am looking for some advice, we are traveling to Positano this June. There seems to be several ways that we could go. Heres the options so far that I have come across:
Italiarail from Rome to Naples about 1hr , hire private car to drive us to Pompeii on the way to our apartment.
Italiarail from Rome to Salerno about 2 hrs, then ferry into Positano.
Any suggestions or advice?
The suggestion of seeing Pompeii on the way to our apartment was suggested by the private car company. If we decided not to do that, does anyone know what the best way to travel there on a later date would be? Or if that makes since to take any extra day to do Pompeii?
Thanks!

The private car from Naples is a good idea if you want to spend the money (about 100 euros). My guess is that the company is looking to do an add-on to the bill by stopping at Pompeii. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but see what the price is for making the stop.
A tour of Pompeii will take a few hours. There are licensed tour guides at the gate, or I suppose the car company will arrange one for you.

With the Pompeii stop it will be around 160 euro
Without the stop, expect to pay 120 euro.
By all means do the stop if you are interested. It's an efficient way to see Pompeii. Don't take time out from Positano as it's too difficult to get there, and the transport is very crowded.

You don't say if your journey to Positano starts from another place in Italy or from the US. If the latter, you will probably be fatigued, jet lagged or both by the time you get to Pompeii that first day. Bear in mind, it will be HOT, HOT, HOT at Pompeii in June. We hired a guide at the entrance and toured for about 4 hours. At the end of four hours, we were wiped out. IMO, you will not enjoy Pompeii very much if you try to do it on the first day. IF you have the time, consider checking into apartment in Positano first, and, after recouperating that first day, seeing Pompeii the next day or the day after, getting a rather early start to beat the heat. At the entrance to Pompeii, the guides will be gathered. Try to find a SMALL group of like-aged English speakers to join up with to save the costs of hiring a guide for just 2 people.

Great question!
That will actually be one of our last stops from a 3 week trip. We are starting in the north and working our way down. We will be coming from Rome. I had thought about the fact that it would be in the middle of the day vs earlier morning or early evening. Just not sure if we take a day away from the coast to see that. I also had heard that taking the ferry into Positano is pretty and cheaper then private car. Has anyone done that option? Thanks for all the great feed back.

The ferry ride is very pretty - but they don;t run very often. So you need to carefully coordinate the ferry times with when you will arrive by train. And how to get the luggage from the train to the dock and then from the dock to the hotel (presumably a taxi).

Taking the ferry *to where* in Positano?
There is only one service per day to Sorrento - and that is for the Sorrento day-tripper crowd as it leaves Positano at around 3pm.
To get to Pompeii from Positano will mean the bus or a driver.

Some people have commented that they prefer Heraculeum to Pompeii in the heat of the summer and it can be covered more completely in the shorter time periods. Some prefer it overall. We loved Pompeii as well as the archeology museum in Naples. We did not see Heraculeum. We leave for Positano today from Naples. Maybe others will comment on this.
