Maybe we should get someone in with a little more imagination than those three limp ideas.

Getting back to practical advice, I think it is a good idea to prepare a list of key phone numbers so that, if something happens to disrupt your travel plans (and it's more likely to be a problem with rain or congestion at the airport than terrorism, but you never know), you can call the right people and make alternative plans. The kinds of telephone numbers you need are:

1) the number for your airline (a number you can dial from each of the country you're departing from, in the UK and in Spain; don't forget that 1-800 numbers don't work everywhere)

2) the numbers of the hotels where you are staying (so that you can rebook if you're delayed)

3) a few telephone numbers for airport hotels (in your departure city, London and in Spain), in case you need to find a place to sleep overnight

4) timetables for alternative flights with your carrier (e.g. flights scheduled later in the day and the next day) and a couple of other carriers (e.g. if you're flying BA, take the numbers for other airlines flying to Spain such as Easyjet);

5) timetables/information for alternative methods of transportation (train, ferry, bus); and

6) the details of any credit card you have that provides travel insurance.

Thank you, Kate W. Great advice!
CNN has just reported that ALL London airports now have a ban on vehicles getting close. It is practical to plan for airport closures.

Checking Fox news (fair and balanced) to see if this is true.

Fox news (fair and balanced) is reporting that the UK is under a terrorism alert.

kelkel: You might want to contact your cruise line and inquire about their policy in the situation you describe. Assuming other passengers might be in the same boat (no pun intended) your ship might delay departure. This happened to us years ago when heavy snow storms in the U.S. prevented enough passengers to get to San Juan, P.R. that the ship waited for the majority to arrive.

For those interested in knowing the extreme extent of the terrorism threat from England, I recommend "Londonistan" by Melanie Phillips. You will be astonished and horrified.

I read her website frequently. To deny the truthfulness of her posts is to deny reality.

If all London airports are closed, for whatever reason, there are going to be a WHOLE lot of other people in the same situation (sol) as you. I assume bus, train, or car is the answer to your question.

re taking the train - keep in mind that it would be doubtful you could make it on the 7th, unless you left the day before:

http://www.seat61.com/Spain.htm#day

It's possible to get from London to Barcelona in a day, although it may cost more and feel longer than the trainhotel option.

Travel from London to Paris by Eurostar, leaving London Waterloo at 08:12 (08:01 on Sundays), arriving Paris Nord at 11:47. Take the metro to the Gare de Lyon (2 stops on RER line D).

Travel from Paris to Montpellier by high-speed TGV train, leaving Paris Gare de Lyon at 13:24 and arriving Montpellier at 16:53. TGV trains are normally very punctual. Bar available.

Travel from Montpellier to Barcelona by modern 'Talgo' train, leaving Montpellier at 17:03 and arriving in Barcelona (França station) at 21:45. This train is the 'Catalan Talgo', with bar and restaurant, treat yourself to dinner..!
