We are in the process of booking airfare and a cruise from Istanbul to Athens. I'm not overly concerned about the situation in Turkey but I am to some extent. I plan on buying travel insurance but I'm wondering if anyone knows if travel insurance typically covers trip interruption due to political unrest.

I called American Express insurance and was told they cover interruption due to acts of terror but not political unrest. That seems a fine line.

Does anyone know of a travel insurance plan that covers loss for political unrest like the current situation in Turkey?

The key is who is doing the defining, you, the local government, the State Department (of what country), the insurance company, the cruise line? Does it require a particular word?

The only insurance definition you can count on is "cancel for any reason" and that is expensive.

I think if you are concerned, you do have to read policies and then ask questions, because I don't really think too many companies are going to cover "political unrest", which could mean anything, including the US. I think there has to practically be a revolution and an insurer isn't going to cover just you deciding you don't want to go.

I don't think it's that fine a line between terrorism and political unrest, which is kind of the norm in many countries. Heck, I've been in plenty of countries with political unrest, like Spain, didn't bother me.
