Ekscrunchy and Texastrips..and all others: if we were to delete Paestrum from our day trip, what other sites/ towns should we add? My friend is less interested in archeological sights than I, and I will return at some point with my husband, so I can visit Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestrum later.
I definitely want to see Villa Cimbrone, in Ravello; the towns of Cetrani, Cetara and Nocella that you mentioned sound like sights that would interest us. Also, I read conflicting reports about Villa Rufolo...recommendation?
Neither of us like overly touristy places ( I am reminded of my experience last year in Como. We had a car and visited Bellagio: we couldn't leave fast enough, and yet 10 minutes away was Villa Melzi, with the most sublime gardens imaginable...acres of magnificent landscaping situated right on Lake Como, with stunning views from every vantage point. Strangely, one never hears about this beautiful site. Villa Carlotta, certainly beautiful but not nearly as impressive, is much better known).
NAPLES: does anyone have advice on how to make the most of 2 full days there? Definitely the Archeological Museum and the Opera House ( my friend was a concert pianist and performed there years ago). We enjoy museums, art, music, interesting churches.
Many thanks for your continued help and suggestions.

Hhm. Well side note first - the museum at Paestum is truly a wonder, and not nearly as well known as it ought to be much like your experience last year.
We haven't been to Caserta but it's supposed to be lovely.
Amalfi - superb church.
